3 Tips to Help You Get Started With Exercise (and Stick With It)

Starting a workout routine can feel intimidating—especially if you’ve been away from exercise for a while or are brand new. The good news is that you don’t have to overhaul your entire life to make fitness a habit. With a few simple strategies, you can set yourself up for success and actually enjoy the process.

Here are my top 3 tips for anyone just getting started:

1. Find a Workout Buddy

Accountability is a game-changer. When you know someone is counting on you to show up, you’re much less likely to skip a session. A workout buddy also makes the experience more fun—you can encourage each other, celebrate progress together, and turn exercise into a social activity instead of a chore.

Think of one friend, family member, or co-worker who might want to start this journey with you. Invite them along—you’ll both benefit.

2. Choose a Style You Actually Enjoy

Not everyone loves the gym, and that’s okay. The best workout is the one you’ll actually do. Whether it’s spin, boxing, yoga, pilates, bootcamps, weightlifting, or something else—find the type of movement that makes you feel energized and excited.

If you’re not sure yet, try experimenting. Sample a few different classes or programs until something clicks. When you enjoy the process, consistency becomes so much easier.

3. Start Small and Build Up

When motivation is high, it’s tempting to go all in—but starting too fast can lead to burnout or even injury. A smarter approach is to begin small and build gradually.

Try just 15–20 minutes a couple of times per week. Focus on creating the habit of showing up first, and once that feels natural, increase your time, intensity, or frequency. Those small, steady steps are what lead to long-term progress.

Final Thoughts

Making exercise a part of your life doesn’t have to be complicated. With a workout buddy to keep you accountable, a style of movement you actually enjoy, and the commitment to start small, you’ll be well on your way to building a routine that lasts.

Remember—it’s not about perfection, it’s about consistency. Every workout you do is a win.
