If you’re brand new to exercise—or maybe coming back after some time away—you might be wondering: Where do I even start?
The truth is, you don’t need to overhaul your whole life or spend hours at the gym to make progress. What really matters is starting with a plan that’s simple, realistic, and enjoyable enough to keep you coming back.
Here’s a secret: the “best” workout isn’t the one that burns the most calories or looks the hardest on Instagram. The best workout is the one you’ll actually stick with.
If you dread a certain type of exercise, it’s going to feel like punishment. But when you find something you genuinely enjoy—whether that’s spin, boxing, yoga, pilates, bootcamps, weightlifting, or something else—it stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like part of your lifestyle.
Not sure what you enjoy yet? Treat it like an experiment. Try a few different styles, give each a fair shot, and notice how your body (and your mind) feel afterwards. You’ll know when you’ve found the one that clicks.
Another way to get into training is finding someone to go to the gym with! A workout buddy makes the journey more enjoyable. You can laugh together when something feels tough, celebrate each other’s wins, and even make friendly competitions to push each other forward. And don’t worry—they don’t need to be at the same fitness level as you. What matters is having someone to share the experience with.
Think of one friend, family member, or co-worker who might also be looking to improve their health—and invite them to join you.
Accountability is one of the biggest motivators. When someone is counting on you to show up, you’re far less likely to hit snooze or talk yourself out of moving.
The best part? Once you start showing up consistently, it gets easier. Over time, the effort becomes automatic—it’s just part of your routine, like brushing your teeth or making coffee in the morning.
So if you’ve been waiting for the “perfect time” to start exercising, this is it. Take one small step this week, and see where it leads.
